IFR ACCREDITED DIPLOMA in REFLEXOLOGY
The way to harmony and health
Reflexology is an ancient art which has its origins in Chinese medicine. It has been recorded by the Egyptians in a wall painting found in a physician's tomb dated about 2330 BC. With the advance of medical science the ancient art of reflexology was disappearing but fortunately it was rediscovered by Dr. William Fitzgerald who, around 1913, began to offer a form of treatment known as "Zone Therapy". From his early work reflexology has evolved.
Reflexology involves the skilled application of pressure to specific points on the feet in order to restore balance to the body. These points represent reflex areas which correspond to parts of the body. The feet can be seen as a map of the body with the right foot representing the right hand side of the body and the left foot the left side. Reflex areas are to be found on the soles, the top and sides of the feet. Similar reflex areas may be used where it is difficult to use the techniques on the feet.
Reflexology is a simple, natural and harmless way to health. It can be used to obtain relief from all kinds of conditions from general stress to specific disorders often where conventional treatment has failed. It can also be used to maintain good health, to build resistance and to prevent illness. Health problems may be detected before they become serious. Mental and physical tension is released, a state of relaxation is induced and energy and vitality abound. The healing art of reflexology brings about the restoration of harmony and optimum health.

International Federation of Reflexologists
The International Federation of Reflexologists was founded in 1983 by a group of like-minded professional reflexologists. These therapists felt that training standards and levels of professional competence were not high enough and that the general public had no way of contacting a therapist whom they could trust to treat them with care and competence. The I.F.R is a constituted body with its own Constitution, Code of Ethics and Practice and a Disciplinary Procedure to govern the conduct of its members. It is a non-profit making organization whose members are professionally qualified therapists and practitioners, or those undergoing training for professional qualification.
Today the Federation has grown to be a leader organization in the field and now has several thousands of members working all over the world, bound together by the strict code of ethics and practice. As well as keeping a register of professional therapists, the I.F.R is largely involved in educational activities and has a list of accredited schools all of which teach to a centrally agreed syllabus. The primary aim of the is to maintain a programme of professional education and training designed to stimulate and uphold high professional standards of qualifications and practice among its membership, for the benefit of reflexology and the general public and to be the focal point of communication.
